Mount Maunganui is a major residential, commercial and industrial suburb of Tauranga located on a tombolo, sand peninsula, to the northeast of Tauranga's city center.
Mount Maunganui is also the name of the large lava dome formed two to three million years ago at the end of the peninsula.
The official Maori name for The Mount is Mauao.
Pilot Bay Beach is located on interior bay side and is only two blocks away from the outer beach on the Pacific Ocean.
This beautiful little protected beach a sandy shoreline with a grassy parkway behind fronts a two-block-deep residential and commercial area.
